Lizzy Hoyt

Born in Edmonton, AB to a musical family, Lizzy has been fiddling, singing and performing for most of her life. At a very young age, Lizzy discovered her love of singing and dancing and soon realized she had a passion for musicals, operas and Fred Astaire and Ginger Rogers movies from the 30s, 40s and 50s. Though initially trained as a classical violinist, Lizzy quickly and easily picked up fiddle tunes from her grandfather, also a fiddle player, at family gatherings where music-making was part of the family tradition. Before long, Lizzy was entertaining family and friends herself with her rhythmic and energetic Celtic, country and old-time fiddling.

Again, it was a family connection that would bring her into the country music world at the age of 15, where she got her start as a back-up singer and fiddler for the award winning Canadian singer Eli Barsi. As a back-up singer and fiddler for Eli, and many other Canadian recording artists, Lizzy has performed across Western Canada and in the United States at venues such as the Calgary Stampede, Big Valley Jamboree, Edmonton Klondike Days and Silver Dollar City in Branson, Missouri.

In the fall of 2006, Lizzy decided to start a recording project all of her own featuring her exceptional fiddling talents as well as her gifts as a singer and as a multi-instrumentalist, playing the mandolin and the guitar. My Red Shoes reflects Lizzy’s varied taste in music and is a nod to the many performers she counts as sources of inspiration – from Alison Krauss and Rhonda Vincent to Dolly Parton to Norah Jones and to Canadian fiddler Natalie MacMaster. Recorded in Branson, Missouri and self-produced along with Eli Barsi and John Cunningham, the album contains a wide variety of fiddling styles: old-time, country, bluegrass and Celtic. Although Lizzy can comfortably play many different styles of music, she has managed to find a sound all of her own. Some have called this style simply “honest”.

Currently studying at the University of Alberta, Lizzy plans to continue her Bachelor of Arts degree in Sociology and Psychology all the while honing her master skills as an entertainer in hopes of releasing more albums in the future. During the upcoming year, Lizzy will be touring to support and promote her debut album. Keep your eyes open for her toe-tapping performances at a wide range of festivals and concert venues throughout the year!
