Alfie Myhre & Friends and the Metis Dancers

A child prodigy on the fiddle at age eleven, Alfie was given
the opportunity to become the youngest contestant ever to appear
in the Canadian National Old-time Fiddle Contest at the CNE in
Toronto in 1949. He competed in the Under-30 category and placed
2nd behind the famous Ward Allen.
In 1951 Alfie studied classical violin with Edgar Williams at
Alberta College. Later, Alfie toured Canada with Wilf Carter as
a member of a Western Swing group called The Frontiersmen.
Alfie was a staff musician on CHED Radio for many years and
was, for two years, a full-time member on the Gaby Haas Show on
CFRN-TV. He also appeared on CBC-TV’s very popular “West On
Five” and performed regularly as a member of The Pathfinders,
appearing on CBC’s The Stu Davis Show.
In 1980 Alfie joined the Alberta Travelers, a sophisticated
folk/country group that traveled across Canada to promote
Alberta’s 75th Anniversary. He is a two-time winner of the Grand
North American Fiddle Championship (1984 & 1986).
At present, Alfie is privileged to be the fiddler for a young
group of dancers, The Metis Child and Family Jiggers.
Alfie is a multi-instrumentalist. Although he prefers the
fiddle, he is an excellent tenor banjo player.
Alfie and his wife Lydia have owned and operated a family
music store in Edmonton since 1967. Myhre’s Music is now owned
and operated by their son Byron.
